Purposeful practice is a specific type of practice method that focuses on deliberate and intentional efforts to improve performance in a particular skill or domain. It involves setting specific goals, receiving immediate feedback, and pushing oneself beyond the comfort zone. The purpose of purposeful practice is to continuously challenge and improve one's abilities.

On the other hand, other forms of practice methods may not have the same level of intentionality and focus on improvement. These methods may involve repetitive or mindless practice without clear goals or feedback. While they may still contribute to skill development to some extent, they may not be as effective in achieving significant progress or mastery.

In summary, purposeful practice stands out from other practice methods due to its deliberate and goal-oriented nature, which leads to more efficient skill development and improvement.

Having been myself a sports professional for over four decades I have taught Yoseikan Karate in many dojo's, in as many countries and unfortunately not all Karate students seem to have grasped the method of purposeful practice, often mindlessly repeating kata after kata in the wrong repetitive manner, practicing week after week at the Dojo in the comfort zone,

Let's face it, after a hard days work the last thing you want to do is break your back in the Dojo right ! let's face it it's nice in the comfort zone, the only problem is nothing grows there.

Over the next few posts I will explore how advancements in sports science helps provides us with valuable insights into how to develop and progress in all sports, how it is possible to over train and get worse and how skill acquisition and proficiency are only achieved by incorporating deliberate practice methods.
